Anyone who watched the Lethal Weapon films in the 80s-90s will remember the wild buddy chemistry of Riggs and Murtaugh. When the TV reboot aired in 2016, many doubted whether it could match the original. But after watching all three seasons, we can say that Lethal Weapon is a well-rounded buddy cop series with action, drama, and comedy, perfect for those who enjoy light but not mindless entertainment.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The series follows the same structure as the film, with main characters Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford), a former Navy SEAL who recently lost his wife and unborn child, leading him to reckless behavior with no regard for his own safety. Meanwhile, Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) is a family-loving cop nearing retirement who wants a peaceful life but is unexpectedly paired with Riggs. Their first mission involves investigating a murder that leads to a major crime network, forcing them to learn to work together despite their opposite personalities.

Each episode features a case-of-the-week format mixed with an overarching plot that develops throughout the season. The story intensifies as characters face old enemies from Riggs' past or when Murtaugh's family is endangered. The series balances thrilling cases and character relationships well.

Acting and Characters

The heart of the series lies in the chemistry of the two leads. Damon Wayans as Murtaugh delivers stress and dry humor naturally, providing a stable anchor that makes viewers feel safe and laugh at his jokes. Clayne Crawford as Riggs does his homework, conveying pain, madness, and vulnerability convincingly. Their performances mesh perfectly, making us invested in their slowly developing friendship.

However, after season 2, Crawford was fired due to on-set conflicts and replaced by Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole in season 3. Scott does well as the new partner, but his chemistry with Wayans isn't as tight as before, slightly diminishing the final season's charm. Supporting actors like Keesha Sharp (Trish Murtaugh) and Kevin Rahm (Brooks Avery) add realism and color to the story.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

As an action series, Lethal Weapon doesn't disappoint. Chase scenes, fights, and shootouts are thrilling and fluid, using varied camera techniques like handheld for realism and high angles for big action sequences, matching film quality.

The score by Nathan Blanchard (from The Bridge) features funk and rock vibes fitting Los Angeles' atmosphere, especially the title track using the original film's “Lethal Weapon” song, evoking nostalgia and connecting with old fans.

Editorial Analysis

What makes this series stand out is its serious and sensitive portrayal of Riggs' depression and suicidal thoughts, while maintaining Lethal Weapon's signature humor. Riggs' trauma justifies his risk-taking behavior, not just reckless bravado.

Another strength is balancing characters' personal and professional lives, especially the Murtaugh family, given significant roles that make viewers care and worry when they're in danger. However, with 55 episodes, some feel repetitive or stretched, especially in middle seasons with lower stakes.

The lead actor change in season 3, though handled well, shifted the series' direction and may have contributed to its cancellation after season 3 without a clear conclusion, which is a shame as the series had potential to continue.

Verdict

If you're a fan of the original film or enjoy buddy cop series with action and humor, the Lethal Weapon series is a great choice. Despite a stumble in the final season, overall it's an enjoyable watch for the whole family, especially the first two seasons which are excellent.
